| Our Quarantine facility serves two important functions:
Firstly, All our new arrivals are immediately housed in Quarantine where they are assessed on their general health, as well as inspected for signs of possible disease or infection. This is important as we don’t want to put a sick fish in the aquarium, but more importantly, we don’t want any disease from a new fish entering the aquarium water where it could infect the other animals. For this reason, the quarantine system is completely separate from the aquarium system: separate water, pumps, filters, and it is set in a different location. Once we are happy that the new arrival is fit and healthy, we transfer it to the display exhibition, where we monitor it while it settles into its new home. |

Secondly, if for any reason an animal should become sick in the aquarium we can move it out to Quarantine to be treated. Again this is to try and reduce the risk of the spread of disease from the sick fish to the healthy ones, but it also allows the Quarantine to act as a quiet, stress free zone for the sick fish where it can recuperate, and where we can monitor its recovery. Having a separate quarantine allows us to administer suitable medicines to the animal without the worry of these medicines contaminating the aquarium water. Again, once we are happy the animal has fully recovered, we can move it back into the aquarium. |
