Aquaculture

Aquaculture is the section of the aquarium set aside for rearing and growing on our young fish. Its use ranges from a holding facility for our un-hatched Shark and Ray eggs, to a place to hold hundreds of baby Mullet while they grow big enough to be put into the main exhibition. Aquaculture’s use changes throughout the year depending on what we are rearing, so each time you visit you are bound to come across a different selection of baby animals.

We also use Aquaculture, with its shallow tanks and easy access, as a holding facility for newly collected juvenile fish and shellfish, to allow them to settle into their new surroundings, and develop a feeding routine, before they move into the deeper tanks of the main exhibition. Examples of fish which we can have in Aquaculture at any time include; Plaice, Brill, Pollack, Rockling, Sea Scorpions and Blenny.
