One of our most popular exhibits is our replica of ALVIN, the Deep Submergence Vehicle (DSV). Kids of all ages are able to step inside and explore this life-size replica of the structure of the famous submarine.

The real version is able to reach depths of 4,500m, that’s nearly 3 miles straight down! It carries two people to these great depths, cruising at a speed of half a knot! It is 5.9 metres (19 feet) long and weighs 15 tonnes.

By reaching such depths, ALVIN allows scientists and photographers to explore over 80% of the oceans’ sea floor.
