There will be items to purchase and a range of activities for all the family including face painting, cartoon classes, magic show, bouncy castles, art & crafts, marine displays and lots more fun activities and games. “Since many of our staff go to sea on research surveys we appreciate the work done by the Galway Lifeboat and are anxious to help in any way we can,” said Marine Institute CEO Dr. Peter Heffernan. “The event promises to be a fun-packed day for adults and children alike - particularly those who are interested in learning more about the work of the Marine Institute and the marine community in Galway”. For those interested in viewing the architecture of the Institute’s award winning building, tours will be available throughout the afternoon. The Marine Institute wishes to thank all of the exhibitors, sponsors and contributors taking part in the Summer Fête in aid of the Galway Lifeboats Ireland. Divers to
raise much needed funds for Galway Lifeboats This week-end the NUIG-GMIT Sub Aqua Club will be carrying out its annual sponsorship dive to raise money for the Galway RNLI Lifeboat Station. This year they have extended their dive from 24 hours to 30 hours in the hope of raising much needed funds for the RNLI. A number of divers from the club will participate in the uninterrupted dive in Ocean Tank at Galway Atlantaquaria in Salthill and will commence at 11am on Saturday morning 10th July. John Killeen from Let’s do it Galway will launch the dive together with members from Galway Lifeboat. Divers and club members hope to raise as much money as possible and are asking the public to donate either online on www.galwaydiving.com or at the aquarium over the week-end. Sponsorship cards are also available from the club. RNLI volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service it has 43 stations in Ireland and depends on voluntary donations to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824 its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 137,000 lives. The dive will be streamed live throughout the 30 hours on the clubs website, www.galwaydiving.com End Contact Niamh Nolan |

GALWAY’S BIG BAY CLEAN
UP
As part of Galway's Marine Month of Madness, Galway City Council and Galway Atlantaquaria have teamed up to organise THE BIG BAY CLEAN UP!
Each year Galway Atlantaquaria organises a beach clean as part of the Marine Conservation Society’s Beach Watch programme and this year we are looking to have the biggest clean yet with 7 beaches from Rinville to Barna taking part.
According to the Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS), beach litter is more than just an eyesore for thousands of beach visitors across the country; it is a global issue that represents a major threat to many vulnerable marine species. It is estimated that, globally, over a million birds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles die every year from entanglement, or ingestion of plastics.
Sharon Carroll from Galway City Council says, “Local people recognise the wonderful resource we have on our doorstep and this shows in the commitment with the growing number of volunteers each year. We’re delighted that some hotels, companies and community groups as well as individuals have shown an interest this year, showing that people do really care about their environment” This years Big Bay Clean Up will take place on Sunday 16th May from 12.00 noon and interested volunteers should contact the aquarium on 091-585100 or email atlantaquaria@eircom.net Bag, gloves, litter pickers etc. will be supplied by Galway City Council.

As we live in a city, it is sometimes easy to forget about the wildlife
all around us. From forests and marshes, to beaches and lakes, Galway
city probably has the greatest number of wildlife habitats of any city
in Ireland. |
