June 21st
2010. Uninhabited
Island gets a thorough Clean Fifteen
volunteers from the Galway Dive Club, Galway Atlantaquaria and the Marine
Institute took on a mammoth beach clean at Brannock Island, an uninhabited
island west of Inis Mór as part of Clean Coast Week on Sunday (20th
June 2010). Over 115
refuse sacks including larger items such as tyres, fish boxes and buoys
were removed by a rib from the island. This initiative was supported by
Galway County Council and An Taisce’s Clean Coast Project. Whilst the majority
of the rubbish collected was marine based there was also plenty of public
waste. Kieran Tolan from the Galway Dive Club said “The Island is a
sanctuary for marine life including seals and bird life and this rubbish
can be a threat to their lives, it is estimated that, globally, over a
million birds and 100,000 marine mammals die every year from entanglement, or
ingestion of plastics. we were
delighted to be able to undertake this clean up and thank all the volunteers
who took part”. For more
